Help! My Heater is Blowing Cold Air!

It’s cold outside, and all you want to do is enjoy some warmth inside your home. However, when you crank up your thermostat you realize that your heater is blowing cold air. Not only are you confused, but you’re also uncomfortable in your own house. What’s causing your heater to blow cold air? There are several possible reasons. Keep reading to learn more.

Thermostat Issues

Sometimes members in the household adjust the thermostat to fit their own needs. If your heater is blowing cold air, first check with members of your household to see if they are adjusting the thermostat without you knowing. If no one has been adjusting the thermostat, the next thing to do is to ensure that it’s set to “auto” not “on”.

Dirty Air Filters

As air moves through the exchanges and into the gas chamber, air passes through a filter. If your air filters are dirty or clogged, it can make it difficult for the air to move into the gas chamber where it’s warmed up. This problem can be resolved by swapping out your dirty filters and regularly swapping out air filters every 90 days.

Pilot Light is Off

The pilot light indicates whether your heater is lighting the fuel. If it’s turned off, it means that your system is not lighting the fuel needed to produce warm air. If you have a newer unit, they usually have electronic pilot lights that can’t go out. Older units, however, can go out. If this happens, you can consult your owner’s manual to find out how to get it back on.

Dirty Flame Sensor

Your flame sensor is responsible for telling your gas heater to turn on and warm the air that is passing through. A dirty flame sensor may not sense that your burners are on, and in turn, won’t heat the air that passes through. It can also prevent your burners from igniting in the first place. If your flame sensors are dirty, have an HVAC professional fix it for you.
